Throughout the day yesterday, I caught the students creating different art pieces. Some chose to make sculptures from modeling clay, while some worked puzzles, and others drew with crayons. Later on in the day, we did our art lesson on the primary, secondary, and complimentary colors. The students were given the primary colors to make all of the secondary colors. As we explored all of the colors, we also discussed Pop Artist, Jim Dine. We discussed his huge piece of art that was made from bronze. Then, we looked at one of his paintings of three flags that started out with a simple heart in the middle of the canvas. Each of the students made his/her very own replica of Jim Dine's flag piece. Then, each made another painting that represented the student. Today, we started by discussing the different types of art we will display in the Museum of Campus Art around the Campus School. Then, we took a closer look at abstract art. We viewed a few pieces by James Pollock. One of his most famous pieces sold for $140,000,000. We learned that he chose not to name his art but give each piece a number so that the "title" did not take away from the actual meaning of the paintings he created. Then, we created our own abstract art. Next, we learned how to select books in the library. We are going to be reading a lot this summer and wanted to get a good start on the reading program. Each of us checked out a book this morning that will stay in our classroom for silent reading time each day.
